United Airlines Backs AI Startup Assaia to Speed Up Gate and Stand Assignments

Aviation News Online
United Airlines Ventures, the airline's investment arm, has taken a stake in Assaia, a company building artificial-intelligence software for airport operations. The investment supports further development of Assaia's flagship product, StandManager, a platform that allocates aircraft gates and stands by continuously processing real-time operational data rather than relying on the static schedules airports and airlines have traditionally used. Gate and stand assignment is a deceptively high-stakes function: getting it wrong ripples into longer aircraft turnaround times, missed connections and knock-on delays across a hub's entire schedule, especially as conditions shift through the day with weather, air traffic control changes and irregular operations. By processing live data instead of a fixed plan, StandManager is designed to re-optimize those assignments as circumstances change rather than leaving gate agents and ramp controllers to work around a schedule that's already gone stale. Neither company disclosed the size of United's investment. The deal adds United to a growing list of carriers backing AI-focused airport technology vendors, reflecting how much of the industry's near-term AI investment is going toward operational efficiency tools working behind the scenes rather than passenger-facing applications.
